BYETTA PEN
Byetta is an injectable medication used to improve blood
sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. Byetta is used
with metformin or another type of antidiabetic medication
called sulfonylureas. It may be used with a combination of
metformin and a sulfonylurea. There are lots of antidiabetic
medicines that contain a sulfonylurea. Byetta cannot be
considered as substitute for insulin in patients whose
diabetes requires insulin treatment. The safety and efficacy
of Byetta has not been studied in children.
Byetta comes in a prefilled pen and there are two prefilled
pens (5 mcg or 10 mcg), which are available in the market,
depending on your prescribed dose (5 mcg or 10 mcg, twice a
day). Each Byetta pen has 60 doses to provide 30 days of two
times a day injections. You must do a “New Pen Set-Up” one
time only, when beginning with a new prefilled Byetta Pen.
If you do this “New Pen Set-Up” prior to each injection, you
will run out of medicine before 30 days. Use Byetta exactly
as suggested by your healthcare provider. Your dose may be
increased after using Byetta Pen for 30 days.
Do not
increase or decrease your dose unless your healthcare
provider has told you to change your dose. Your physician
must teach you how to inject Byetta Pen before you use it
for the first time. If you have questions or do not
understand the instructions, talk to your physician or
pharmacist. Ask your physician which needle length and gauge
is best for you. Inject your dose of Byetta under the skin
of your upper leg (thigh), stomach area (abdomen), or upper
arm. Byetta is injected, two times a day, at any time within
the 60 minutes (1 hour) before your morning and evening
meals (or before the two main meals of the day,
approximately 6 hours or more apart). If you use too much
Byetta, call your physician or poison control center right
away.
